FaceBook FaceOff FaceCrook

September 1st, 2007 · No Comments · Uncategorized

In the latest episode of the Intellectual Property Follies we have FaceBook.

FaceBook, the latest social network, (social as in disease) and arguably the largest advertising sharecropping network, may need to be renamed. Currently, Mark E. Zuckerberg, is being held up as being the creator of FaceBook. He was the guy who got the money men on board and built the site into the thing it is.

Worth upwards of a Billion Dollars or 8 Billion. (take that with a grain of salt, actually a mountain of salt, considering the same folks who value these things, also are up to their necks in the subprime mortage mess) With sales of 150 million and earnings of 30 million somehow becomes billions in value. Wall Street Math for sure.

John Markoff of the NYT has an interesting view of this. “Who Founded Facebook? A New Claim Emerges”

FaceOff
But three fellow Harvard Students are contending that ain’t necessarily so. They are suing him in Federal Court.
From Portfolio.com comes this nugget:

The lawsuit, filed by brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra, accuses Zuckerberg, Facebook’s 23-year-old C.E.O, of stealing the source code, design, and business plan for Facebook in 2003 when he briefly worked in the Harvard dorms as a programmer for their own fledgling social-networking site, now known as ConnectU.

The plaintiffs have demanded that Facebook be shut down and that full control of the site - and its profits - be turned over to them.

Why wish for a loaf of bread, when you can go big and wish for the entire supermarket. Benefits of a Harvard education, I guess….

But Wait! There is More! Here comes Aaron J. Greenspan According to this Times Article

“Both parties seem to have forgotten Aaron J. Greenspan, yet another Harvard classmate. He says he was actually the one who created the original college social networking system, before either side in the legal dispute. And he has the e-mail messages to show it.” (emphasis mine)

Now we have yet another player, who has evidence that he was first. As for who wins, I could care less. The only thing missing from this drama is the black hand of Skull and Bones in the background.
My questions are different.

With all the coding going on, did any of these folks actually attend classes? How many of these folks watched Highlander and have bought into the tagline There can be only one?

Who needs Soap Operas?
